Indian Summer
14" x 48", acrylic, 1992

I was shopping at a bookstore one day when I saw this young woman working behind a counter. I was struck by the orange/reddish colors in her hair and skin. Right away I knew she belonged in an autumn painting.

Fiona Detail
Indian summer air has a peculiar feel to it. No matter how warm it is, you can often feel an underlying coolness in the wind. I think I captured the major elements of an indian summer. The leaves on the tree are changing color, the falling leaf indicates the passing of summer, and she is enjoying that pleasant indian summer breeze under an autumn sun. I like it when a subject is perfect and a painting comes together like this.
